Endless Summer in Antalya

The 2018 summer in Antalya started early this year. By mid-April, temperatures in Antalya reached up to 31 degrees – 9 degrees above previous years’ averages.

Tourism professionals consider April 1 the start of the beach season. Since 2012 various hotel representatives and tourists celebrate this by swimming to celebrate it [1]. By the weekend of April 28, temperatures in Antalya reached 33 degrees and people flocked to the city’s famous Konyaalti Beach [2].

Those attending the Eurasia Airshow Antalya aerospace exhibition and shows, held in Antalya on April 28-29, were forced to retreat to the shadows of the aircraft in the demonstration area from time to time, due to the extreme heat [3]

In addition to temperatures 11-12 degrees above the normal seasonal averages, the Antalya centre received 75% less rain in April than seasonally normal. With rainfall averages that have continuously declined since 2011, April 2018 in Antalya was just a preview to a long, dry, sunny summer. Temperatures that did not fall below 28 degrees – even in October – provide further evidence that Antalya’s summers now stretch to between six and seven months.

Antalya, with more than 60,000 tourists per day still arriving in October, enjoyed an endless summer this year, with early blooming orange flowers and low rainfall; either due to global warming or to the prayers of holidaymakers who want to enjoy the sea in low season. [4]
